Possibility of Periodic Online Live Discussions of Ideas from "Play Makes Us Human"
If there is enough interest, I will arrange it.
Dear friends,
I’ve been spending the evening reading and re-reading the many thoughtful, thought provoking, and in some cases passionate comments on my Letter #64, on reasons why the concept of “addiction” is unhelpful in understanding and treating problematic gaming or social media use. I will, soon, post a new letter responding to at least some of those thoughts and questions.
However, my purpose here is to ask a question. There seems to be so much interest and intelligence among the readers of this substack that it might be fun to meet occasionally online, probably via Zoom, for a live discussion. I’m thinking maybe once a month with a different topic each month, ideally one that has generated considerable debate.
If I arrange this, it would be open only to paid subscribers. Frankly, part of the reason for that would be to possibly increase the number paid subscribers. As many of you know, I contribute all income from paid subscription to nonprofit organizations that work to bring more play and other independent activities to children’s lives, several of which I am directly involved with. The other reason to restrict it this way is to keep the potential attendees within a reasonable limit. At present there are about 15,000 free subscribers and 270 paid subscribers.
If you like the idea of such online meetings and believe you would join some of them if offered, let me know that in the comments section. If you have thoughts about the best way to do this, please share them.
Much of the fun of this substack for me is having my own thinking stretched by comments from readers.
With respect and best wishes,
Peter
Yes, I'm in. I like the idea of a fund for those who are active in the "worldwide community" but can't afford to pay. If you could arrange a fund to "distribute" to activists I would contribute to it. Won't it be informative if this were an international forum?
Forgive the "self-promotion" - I have a chapter on Play in my soon to be released book. Your writings and those of your colleagues at the "Journal of Play" informed that chapter.

Me too. I would upgrade to participate 😊
